What is ISO 9001:2026?
Since its introduction in 1987, the ISO 9000 family of standards has served as a widely adopted management framework across both manufacturing and service sectors. Certification is applicable to organizations of all sizes and industries, signalling reliability, supporting customer requirements, and offering a competitive advantage — particularly when pursuing new business opportunities or participating in tenders.
In summer 2023, ISO Technical Committee ISO/TC 176 SC 2 formally initiated the revision of ISO 9001:2015.
ISO 9001:2026 will represent the next evolution of the standard. It is expected to build on the 2015 edition, retain the Annex SL structure, and introduce editorial refinements alongside shifts in emphasis that reflect modern business realities, including stronger attention to quality culture and ethical behaviour.
Timeline of ISO 9001:2026
ISO standards follow a structured revision cycle to ensure they remain relevant and aligned with current organizational needs.
Initial Draft – Draft International Standard (DIS)
The ISO/DIS 9001 was published in August 2025 and was open to the public for a 12-week ballot and comment period which has since closed in preparation for the FDIS.
Final Draft – Final Draft International Standard (FDIS)
Publication of ISO/FDIS 9001 is anticipated in March 2026. At this point, the requirements are expected to be largely finalized and agreed upon.
New Standard – ISO 9001:2026 publication
The updated ISO 9001 standard is targeted for publication in September 2026. Its release will initiate the transition period for organizations holding certification under ISO 9001:2015.
Changes Coming in the ISO 9001:2026
Clause 3: Terms & Definitions
With ISO/DIS 9001, new quality-management-specific terms are incorporated directly into the standard.
This reduces the need to consult external references, simplifying interpretation and making it easier for teams to stay consistently aligned in how they understand and apply the QMS.
Clause 4: Context
Climate change and sustainability are explicitly recognized within the organizational context in ISO 9001:2026.
As a result, quality management systems will need to reflect these considerations, enabling organizations to respond to stakeholder expectations, demonstrate alignment with ESG priorities, and remain competitive in an increasingly sustainability-focused market.
Clause 5: Leadership
ISO/DIS 9001 places added emphasis on ethical conduct and the development of a strong quality culture as leadership responsibilities.
Senior management is expected to demonstrate visible commitment — for example through targeted training, transparent communication, and leading by example — ensuring these values are embedded across the organization.
Clause 6: Planning
ISO/DIS 9001 distinguishes more clearly between risk and opportunity, introducing a stronger focus on opportunity-based thinking.
Organizations may need to establish clearer approaches to resilience planning and show how they balance risk management with proactive identification of opportunities for improvement and growth.
Clause 7: Support
Awareness requirements in ISO/DIS 9001 now extend to quality culture and ethical behaviour.
This means training, communication, and employee development initiatives should move beyond basic compliance, helping individuals at all levels actively demonstrate these principles in everyday work.
Clause 8: Operation
ISO/DIS 9001 introduces relatively limited changes within the operational clause, with updates largely focused on terminology and alignment.
Organizations should review documentation and processes to ensure consistency with revised clause references, though the overall operational impact is expected to be minimal.
Clause 9: Performance Evaluation
The fundamental expectations for performance evaluation in ISO/DIS 9001 remain largely unchanged.
Activities such as monitoring, measurement, internal audits, and management reviews continue as core requirements. The emphasis shifts toward making better use of data — identifying quality trends, supporting informed decision-making, and demonstrating continual improvement — without introducing unnecessary complexity.
Clause 10: Improvement
ISO/DIS 9001 highlights a more explicit role for leadership in enabling and sustaining continual improvement.
Organizations may need to demonstrate how leadership actively supports improvement initiatives, moving beyond corrective actions to foster long-term, organization-wide progress.
New in ISO 9001:2026 — Annex A: Clarification of structure, terminology and clauses
A notable addition to ISO 9001:2026 is Annex A, which provides supplementary guidance to support interpretation and implementation.
For the first time, the standard includes an annex offering detailed clarification of its structure, terminology, and clause intent. Spanning over 15 pages, Annex A is designed to help both new and experienced users better understand and apply the requirements of ISO 9001:2026 in practice.
Benefits Of The New ISO 9001
1. Realign Your QMS With Strategic Goals:
ISO 9001:2026 strengthens the link between quality management and business strategy, encouraging organizations to align their QMS with long-term objectives such as resilience, sustainability, and performance improvement. This helps move quality from a compliance activity to a driver of strategic decision-making and organizational direction.
2. Refresh Stakeholder Engagement:
The revised standard places greater emphasis on understanding and responding to stakeholder expectations, including customers, regulators, and partners. This supports stronger trust, better communication, and improved alignment with market and societal demands.
3. Integrate Modern Values Such As Ethical Practice & Quality Culture:
ISO 9001:2026 reinforces ethical behaviour and quality culture as organizational priorities rather than isolated responsibilities. Embedding these values across teams can strengthen accountability, consistency, and overall quality performance.
4. Ensure Continued Certification & Audit Readiness:
The updated requirements encourage clearer demonstration of risk management, operational control, and measurable outcomes. Aligning early with the revision can help organizations maintain certification, improve audit preparedness, and adapt smoothly to evolving expectations.
What To Do Next
Organizations that are already certified can leverage their current QMS as a solid basis for alignment with ISO 9001:2026. The existing system remains fully relevant and, with targeted adjustments, enables an efficient and low-effort transition to the new requirements. For organizations not yet certified, implementing ISO 9001:2015 continues to be a sensible approach. As the revision is evolutionary, the transition to the 2026 version can be achieved efficiently based on the current standard.
The transition period until 2029 allows sufficient time for a strategically planned implementation. Acting early supports a controlled, well-prepared transition.
